Hiragana Foundations: R/W-row and N
ひらがな基礎:ら行・わ行・ん
~25 min
Learn to hear, recognise and actively recall ら・り・る・れ・ろ・わ・を・ん.
Can-do goal
You can hear, read and type ら・り・る・れ・ろ・わ・を・ん without answer choices.
ひらがな基礎:ら行・わ行・ん
Click each character, listen, and imitate the sound. Then cover the romaji and retrieve it from memory.
Pronunciation focus
The Japanese r is a light tap, not an English r. を is normally pronounced o as a particle; ん changes subtly before different sounds.
Form and handwriting
- ら: a short top stroke precedes the lower curve.
- り: two strokes; the right stroke descends farther.
- る: finish with a small loop, unlike ろ.
- れ: the right stroke travels outward without closing a loop.
- ろ: one open curve; contrast the ending with る.
- わ: the right curve stays open and flowing.
- を: three strokes; it is mainly used as the object particle.
- ん: one continuous nasal-sign curve; contrast it with そ.
Write each character slowly three times, then once from memory. Compare structure and stroke direction rather than decorative font thickness.
Mixed retrieval
The practice screen mixes roughly 70% current targets with 30% characters from mastered earlier groups. Practise both directions: character to sound and sound to character.
Mastery task
Complete recognition, listening and active recall practice. Each mode requires at least five attempts and 80% accuracy. Review the group again tomorrow before treating it as stable knowledge.
