Hiragana: Small tsu and consonant doubling

促音・小さいっ

Elementary
~25 min

Train accurate perception and recall of 促音・小さいっ.

Can-do goal

You can hear, distinguish, read and type the target patterns in 促音・小さいっ.

How it works

Small っ creates a one-beat pause before the next consonant. Do not pronounce it as tsu. Hold the closure briefly: きって = ki-(pause)-te.

きてkite
きってkitte
さかsaka
さっかsakka
かこkako
かっこkakko
もっとmotto
ちょっとchotto

Meaningful contrast

The pause can distinguish words: きて (come/wear and...) versus きって (stamp/cut and...). Listen for timing, not volume.

Practice sequence

  1. Listen without looking.
  2. Imitate the timing aloud.
  3. Read the displayed form.
  4. Type it from sound or romaji without choices.
  5. Mix it with earlier material.

Mastery task

Complete recognition, listening and active recall with at least five attempts and 80% accuracy in each mode. Recheck the contrasts on a later day.
