Hiragana: Long vowels

長音

Elementary
~25 min

Train accurate perception and recall of 長音.

Can-do goal

You can hear, distinguish, read and type the target patterns in 長音.

How it works

A long vowel lasts two beats. In hiragana, long a/i/u often add the same vowel; long e commonly uses い and long o commonly uses う.

Meaningful contrast

Length can change meaning: おばさん is aunt or middle-aged woman; おばあさん is grandmother or elderly woman. Count beats rather than stretching randomly.
