A1: Greetings for the situation

場面に合ったあいさつ

Beginner
~25 min

I can choose and use a basic greeting appropriate to the time and situation.

Can-do goal

I can choose and use a basic greeting appropriate to the time and situation.

Scene first

Imagine meeting a teacher in the morning, entering a shop, or meeting someone for the first time. Japanese greetings depend on time, relationship and situation.

Core expressions

  • おはようございます — polite morning greeting
  • こんにちは — daytime greeting
  • こんばんは — evening greeting
  • はじめまして — used only when meeting for the first time
  • よろしくおねがいします — closes an introduction and expresses goodwill

Politeness and culture

おはよう is casual; おはようございます is safer with teachers, colleagues and unfamiliar adults. こんにちは is not normally used as a telephone greeting. A small bow may accompany a greeting, but the language choice matters more than memorising a fixed bow angle.

Can-do task

Choose suitable expressions for morning, daytime, evening and a first meeting. Then say a two-line first greeting aloud without reading.
