Can-do goal

I can report what someone said and express an opinion.

Use plain form + と思います for an opinion and + と言っていました to report speech.

A：田中さんは何と言っていましたか。
B：電車が遅れると言っていました。私はバスのほうがいいと思います。

Build: I think the bus is convenient. Then adapt it with your own information and say it aloud.

Model dialogue Show kana

A：たなかさんはなんといっていましたか。 B：でんしゃがおくれるといっていました。わたしはバスのほうがいいとおもいます。

Target sentence Show kana

バスはべんりだとおもいます。

Meaning: Report another person's words and add an opinion.

Build it: plain quotation + と言っていました; plain opinion + と思います

When to use it: Nouns and na-adjectives normally use だ before と.

田中さんは電車が遅れると言っていました。

たなかさんはでんしゃがおくれるといっていました。

Tanaka said the train would be delayed.

Watch out: Do not omit だ after a na-adjective before と思います.
