The Art of Bowing (お辞儀)
Bowing (ojigi) is the most common greeting in Japan. There are three main types:
- Eshaku (会釈) - 15 degree bow, for casual greetings
- Keirei (敬礼) - 30 degree bow, for customers and superiors
- Saikeirei (最敬礼) - 45 degree bow, for deep gratitude or apology
Politeness Levels
Japanese has three main politeness levels: plain form (casual), polite form (desu/masu), and keigo (honorific). Using the appropriate level shows respect and social awareness.
Business Cards (名刺)
Exchanging business cards (meishi) is a formal ritual. Present and receive with both hands, read the card carefully, and never write on it or put it in your pocket.
