Overview 概要

Okinawa is Japan's southernmost prefecture, a chain of subtropical islands closer to Taipei than to Tokyo, and culturally distinct from the rest of Japan in ways that go beyond geography. For roughly 450 years, the islands were an independent Ryukyu Kingdom, trading with China, Korea, and Southeast Asia, before being formally annexed by Japan in 1879. That history shows up everywhere — in the red-tiled roofs and shisa lion-dog statues of Okinawan architecture, in a distinct culinary tradition built around pork and bitter melon, and in Uchinaaguchi, the indigenous Ryukyuan language still spoken by some older residents (and classified by UNESCO as endangered). Okinawa was also the site of one of the Pacific War's bloodiest battles in 1945, a history preserved at peace memorials across the main island. Beyond history, the islands are known for some of Japan's best diving and beaches, with coral reefs ringing Ishigaki, Miyako, and the Kerama Islands.

Getting there アクセス

Naha Airport, on the main island, is Okinawa's primary gateway, with direct flights from Tokyo (about 2.5 hours), Osaka, and several other Japanese cities, as well as some international routes. There is no rail or road connection to mainland Japan — Okinawa is reachable only by air or ferry. Getting around the main island is easiest by rental car, as public transit is limited outside Naha (the monorail, Yui Rail, covers only the city center). Reaching the outer islands like Ishigaki or Miyako requires a separate short domestic flight from Naha.
